The Food Services Department maintained an operating budget of
$21.4 million during the 2009-2010 school year. The department initiated a Cook/Chill system at its new facility in August of 1997. Since that time, the system has allowed the department to increase productivity and created an efficient means of providing tasty and nutritious meals to United ISD students and staff. The department employs dietitians to develop nutritious and healthy menus that meet guidelines of the
Texas Department of Agriculture. Staff also provides nutrition instruction to students, teachers and parents. Special diets are developed for students due to medical conditions.
Throughout the school year, Food Services provides over
50,000 warm, healthy and nutritious meals to 43 schools just in time for serving; more than
3,000 snacks per day for students in the After School Program; and,
over 500 Special Diets to students with medical conditions. Food Services caters and offers banquet services to district schools and departments and, in the summer, operates more than 28 Summer Food Program Sites.
